Welcome to my new series: Study with me

Join me on my study sessions throughout the academic year. I’ll visit different locations on North Campus, including libraries and buildings from different faculties. In this series, you’ll get study strategies, creative descriptions of the study locations, a guide on getting there (when it’s time to visit a hidden gem), a list of study essentials to pack in your bag and (virtual) company while you study.

Like many of the viral “get ready with me” videos on social media, you can also ‘pause’ this article! Start or continue reading it when you’re going to study. If you’re feeling stuck in your studying progress, unsure of where to start or are looking for an ‘asynchronous’ study buddy, this series can help.

Ready? Gather all your materials and join in!

First, grab your study essentials:

  • Headphones to watch your online lecture or play music
  • Reusable water bottle to stay hydrated through the reading, writing and learning
  • Reading materials, including textbooks, physical books, e-books and PDFs
  • Writing tools – a laptop for writing papers, a tablet for taking notes or the all-time favourite: pen and paper

Arriving at the study location

The , referred to as SUB for short, is located at the heart of North Campus. No matter what mode of transportation you take to campus, getting to SUB is convenient – it’s located near the ETS bus stop, the LRT station and parking.

in SUB include the lower level, atrium, main floor, second and sixth floors.

Resources at the location

Some of the perks of studying at SUB are that it's and has a food court. SUB is home to health, wellness, cultural and academic student offices, such as the Career Centre and Counselling + Clinical Services, and to a variety of shops, including and the University Health Centre Pharmacy.

Scheduling deadlines, reading requirements and review sessions

To maximize your study session, I suggest you designate time at the start of the week (I like to do this on Sundays to prepare for the following week) to schedule all your upcoming activities, projects and deadlines. This helps me feel more focused during the week because I already know what I need to do and when.

Since we’re in the first weeks of the term, for this session, we can plan our schedule together.

My SUB study strategy of the day: ‘eating the frog’

I learned about this study strategy at a Writing Workshop with the Academic Success Centre

This strategy has three main components:

  1. Identify the most challenging task for this study session.
This can be a reading on a more abstract or technical topic, or a paper that you aren’t yet sure what to talk about.
  2. Do the hardest part first.
This strategy invites you to complete the most challenging or complex assignment as the first step of the study session. In other words, eat the frog.
  3. Do the easier tasks next.
After tackling the difficult task, this strategy suggests that the rest of the assignments will feel easier, helping you feel more productive in your studying.

Congratulate yourself on all the effort!

Congratulations! You completed one study session of this term, and you did it all in one of the most popular spots on North Campus!

I’ve learned that it’s important to celebrate efforts, even those that at the time seem like ‘small’ wins.

Thank you for joining me on this study adventure. Stay tuned for the next study location -- see you there!
