The Edmonton Stroke Fellowship Program

The ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ's Stroke Fellowship delivers comprehensive, integrated training in vascular neurology, encompassing academic rigor, cutting-edge clinical practice, and impactful research. Beyond exceptional patient care, our program excels in advancing cerebrovascular research and education. Fellows gain in-depth exposure to the full spectrum of this rapidly evolving field, mastering complex clinical management, advanced neuroimaging, acute reperfusion therapies (both intravenous and endovascular), telestroke, and sophisticated secondary prevention strategies.

As a major tertiary referral center, the ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ Hospital's Edmonton Stroke Program (EPS) serves a vast catchment area across northern ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ, parts of British Columbia, and the Northwest Territories, supporting a population of approximately 3 million. Our 24/7 Telestroke network, one of the nation's largest and with nearly 20 years of service, extends our reach significantly. We proudly host Canada's pioneering , enabling pre-hospital stroke imaging and thrombolysis.

We collaborate closely with neuroradiology and interventional neuroradiology, facilitating acute ischemic stroke treatment in large numbers with more than 230 intravenous thrombolysis and 240 endovascular treatments every year.

Our robust clinical volume includes over 3000 annual acute stroke emergency visits, more than 2000 stroke admissions and more than 5500 yearly consultations at our Stroke Prevention Clinics. Our integrated service, featuring more than 30 acute beds and 40 rehabilitation beds, ensures seamless multidisciplinary care in collaboration with partner hospitals offering stroke management.

The ESP team at the ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ Hospital comprises thirteen fellowship-trained stroke neurologists, fostering a rich learning environment.

Our program actively participates in international multicenter clinical trials and fosters investigator-initiated research across diverse aspects of cerebrovascular disease, with ongoing projects led by , , and, among others.

For over 25 years, the Edmonton Stroke Fellowship Program has stood as a pillar of excellence, evolving into one of the most established and extensive programs both nationally and internationally, having shaped the careers of over 80 stroke specialists since 2000. Each year, we welcome three to six fellows from around the globe for one- or two-year clinical, research, or combined fellowships, offering unparalleled access to all facets of the EPS.

Our training philosophy cultivates a vibrant academic and supportive collegial environment, fostering collaboration, mutual respect, and a deep sense of empathy for our patients. As a program aligned with the Canadian Stroke Consortium, we strongly encourage our fellows to pursue .
