How to Apply for a Temporary Resident Visa

Before applying for a TRV, IRCC requires that you renew your study permit.

  • Once your visa application has been successfully processed, IRCC will contact you to mail in your passport to stamp the visa counterfoil in your passport. 
  • If your spouse or common-law partner has work or student status, your spouse/partner will be required to submit a separate online application. You cannot include them with you when you apply
  • If you and all your dependent family members, including minor children with visitor status, we recommend you submit a paper application for the whole family. See an advisor for more details.

Complete the Application for Temporary Resident Visa (IMM5257) form. Make sure you are using the most recent form. You can download the form from your IRCC account.

Supporting Documents

  • Recent Education Transcript
    You can request the official digital copy through Beartracks for a fee. You can also get a printed copy at no cost from the Student Services Centre.
  • A scanned copy of the current study permit or work permit
  • Verification of Enrollment (VOE) for next term
    • Graduate students can request their VOE through the
    • Undergraduate students can request their VOE through Bear Tracks.
  • Letter to confirm that you are exempt from the PAL.
  • Proof of means of financial support
    • Your bank statements for the past 4 months
    • Letter of support from family (if needed)
    • Other proof of income (e.g. Dept. funding letter)
  • Passport-style Digital Photo
  • Passport
    Upload a scanned copy of your passport that shows your birth date and country of origin, and any pages with stamps, visas, or markings.
  • Letter of Explanation, if needed, with any additional information you want to be considered in your application.

Fees and Processing Time

The current fee is $100 CAD. Those applying for Study Permits outside of Canada will be exempt from this fee; all others, including spouses and children of students, will be assessed the fee.

Mailing Instructions

Purchase two prepaid envelopes

  • One letter-sized (318 x 241 mm)
  • One standard-sized (260 x 159 mm)

Choose your mailing service

The service you use depends on whether there are any Canada Post Service disruptions:

  • No service disruptions: Use Canada Post Xpresspost.
  • During service disruptions: Use a private courier service such as FedEx, UPS, or Purolator.

Prepare your envelopes

  • On the standard-sized envelope, fill out the mailing label with your full address in the “Deliver To” field.
  • Make a note of tracking numbers for both envelopes.
  • Enclose the standard-sized envelope inside the letter-sized envelope along with your passport and a copy of the request letter showing your application number.

Important Notes

  • When there are no Canada Post disruptions, IRCC will only return your passport using Canada Post.
  • During Canada Post disruptions, IRCC will return your passport using the prepaid courier return envelope that you provide.
  • Our office is not responsible for any items lost in the mail.
