MA Thesis-Based Program
The thesis-based MA program provides students with an opportunity to earn a graduate degree that offers comprehensive training in social theory and research methods combined with specialized topical learning and research experience through thesis research in an area of interest. This program is suitable for students who are interested in sociology and criminology.
The program requirements include:
- Seminar in Research Design - 3 units
- Seminar in Contemporary Sociological Theory - 3 units
- Quantitative Methods in Social Research - 3 units
- Qualitative Methods in Social Research - 3 units
- Two (2) elective courses, which can be taken within or outside the Department - 6 units
- MA thesis research - students must register in and successfully defend a thesis
Program Total: 18 units + a thesis
The time required to complete this program will vary according to the previous education of the applicant and the nature of the research undertaken, but typically students will take a minimum of two years (24 months).
The thesis-based program is ideal for students who are interested in developing specialized graduate-level skills and want to pursue more hands-on and independent research activities.
All students must also complete INT D 710 to fulfill the Ethics + Academic Citizenship requirement. As well, students must fulfill the IDP and PD requirement as set by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (GPS).
Students in the MA and PhD programs are also expected to attend a series of Professional Skills Workshops hosted by the Department.
